America’s 49th state and by far its largest, Alaska feels like another world to many of us here in the continental forty-eight. And in many ways, Alaska is a different world – a sprawling land of untamed wilderness and natural beauty, with all the advantages of city life in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and around Juneau, the state’s capital. Of the twenty highest peaks in America, seventeen of them are in Alaska, including Mt. McKinley, the highest peak in all of North America. Mountain climbers flock to Alaska every year to climb this majestic mountain. Other popular outdoor activities in the state include rock climbing, fishing, hunting, and hiking. Contrary to popular belief, Alaska actually enjoys very warm summers with temperatures ranging from the mid 60s to the 90s. And the winter months bring a whole new array of snow sports.
The great state of Alaska has more coastline than any other state with nearly 34,000 miles of shoreline. The waters off of Alaska are rich with life and activity. From the sea and the land you can also tour Alaska’s amazing natural formations, including her astounding glaciers. Mendenhall Glacier can actually be driven to from Juneau.
Opportunities in Alaska
There are many opportunities for individuals in Alaska particularly during the summertime when Alaska becomes a hot spot for tourists. But there are also permanent jobs especially in the following industries: fossil fuels, mining, fishing, logging, technology and communication,environment, transportation, construction, and positions with the government. And even though there is a recession going on, Alaska has maintained a fairly health economy because the economy is mostly based on oil.
Alaska is an expensive place to live but the standard of living is high and the locals get to enjoy the outdoors year-round. And because the standard of living is high there are many individuals that are moving there so it’s a good idea for native Alaskans as well as those pursuing the dream in Alaska to earn their degree, especially in this economy. There is a need for educated and experienced professionals in a number of fields and individuals with a degree and experience will most likely be the individuals receiving the job offer. Plenty of opportunities are available in Alaska for first timers or those that have been around the block a few times.
